Daily Mascara and Manifesting in 2023 with Designer Jamila Mariama

We spoke with designer Jamila Mariama (@fashionistamila) about self-awareness, accountability and manifesting in 2023. 

Window, Middle or Aisle? Can I get a window seat, don’t want nobody next to meeee. For some reason I get really nervous on planes so I need to look out the window and see everything that’s happening! I also love the views from above when landing in a new destination.

Where’s the last place you traveled? Last place I traveled was Atlanta, GA. I’ve been about a dozen times but mostly as a child so it’s a completely different experience as an adult. I love its unique identity within black culture, with the perfect mix of southern hospitality and city life.

What does travel mean to you? Travel to me escaping to another reality that helps you mesh different pieces of the world into your own culture and being. I travel with my family a lot so I also see it as a reunion of love. Sharing new experiences with people I love creates a special and strengthening bond.

What’s your idea of a perfect vacation? My idea of a perfect vacation is somewhere far and warm but not far enough the time difference messes up my sleep pattern.

I like traveling in small groups and going places that are picturesque but not overly saturated with tourists. My favorite thing about vacationing is learning about different cultures and ways of life, and the food is one of the most important attractions!

What do you most value in your friendships? Honesty and self awareness is the strongest trait to any relationship and especially special to friends who know me the best.

My best friends and I have been able to do this in a nurturing and mature way and it helps us grow in all of our relationships.

What (or Who) currently inspires you? Traveling is one of the main outlets that inspires me because it’s not just one experience or one person that excites me and challenges me out of my comfort zone - it helps me look at the world and the people in it through a new lens.

What is your self-care routine when traveling? I always keep my face makeup free when traveling and make sure I start the day with a squeaky clean face and lots of moisturizer.

Traveling makes me feel pretty gross especially if it’s a long days worth so I keep face wash and moisturizer in my purse or carry on so I can freshen up once I reach my destination.

Holy grail of your beauty routine? My beauty routine is super simple but the key ingredient is always moisturizer! Also I can’t leave the house without a little mascara!

What are you manifesting in your life right now? I love this question because I’m a true believer in manifesting everything I want and deserve in my life.

Right now I’m especially focusing on manifesting an elevated growth in my side hustle and clothing brand, a new challenging and wholesome 9-5 career as a designer, andddd a pure and safe relationship with my future bae.
